What is Floatation Therapy?

There’s a reason we refer to floatation as “therapy.” This is an incredible method of holistic healing on many levels. Float Therapy is an easy and effective way to invest in your health and happiness. Designed to eliminate all external stimuli, a float tank lets your mind and body take a break from the constant environmental stimulation (gravity, temperature, sound, light, etc.) encountered daily. This allows you to fully relax every muscle in your body, similar to experiencing zero gravity.

Various studies reveal that floating in a state of weightless relaxation can provide a wealth of health benefits. Along with the psychological benefits of float therapy, those who float regularly also enjoy improvements to their physical and emotional wellbeing.

The Physical Benefits

While all the benefits of a regular Epsom salt bath at home are present in a float pod (like major reduction in inflammation), there are many more benefits when you’re floating stretched out and completely effortlessly and your body can enter a complete state of rest. During float, the entire muscle system relaxes simultaneously, allowing the joints to be at complete rest and the spine to gently decompress (yes, you can hand that inversion table right over!). This feeling of weightlessness in a zero gravity environment helps relieve nerve issues like sciatica or tingling in the fingers or toes and pinched nerves. It’s also incredible for pain relief from any spinal issues – compression injuries, disc issues (slipped, bulging, or ruptured disc see great relief), scoliosis, and just that thrown out back.

Other physical benefits include (but aren’t limited to)

  • Faster recovery from athletic training or injury
  • Correction of magnesium deficiencies that can cause cramps, chronic fatigue, migraines, digestive issues, insomnia, and more
  • Pain reduction for chronic pain conditions, migraines, or injury – Arthritis, fibromyalgia,
  • Lyme, lupus, and multiple sclerosis sufferers find great relief in the stress-less environment due to the inflammation reduction and all over release of muscle tension. Floaters report a drastic decrease in their symptoms even after the first float with effects lasting hours, days, and weeks.
  • Reduces blood pressure + heart rate
  • Decreases the production of cortisol, ACTH, lactic acid and adrenaline
  • Increases the production of endorphins
  • Boosts immune function
  • Increases energy
  • Improves sleep patterns and quality + depth of sleep

The Mental Benefits

The desire to relieve stress and anxiety is sought in different forms, as these two conditions can wreak havoc on our daily lives. No matter how often you experience stressors, the impact can be overwhelming, and oftentimes, detrimental to your productivity. In extreme cases, stress and anxiety can even lead to many different problems.

These are some other positive mental benefits of Float Therapy:

  • Increases motivation
  • Reduces brain fog + promotes mental clarity and focus
  • Increases creativity and problem-solving abilities
  • Increases intuition and sense of self
  • Elevates mood
  • Improves patience, mental balance, and sense of calm
  • Promotes a sense of overall well-being
  • Reduces symptoms associated with anxiety, stress, post-traumatic stress, depression, and more

Float for Meditation

The power of deep self-examination found in the stillness of the float environment just cannot be discounted. This space that is held for you promotes deeper meditation, a stronger sense of self, and space to find the answers to your questions apart from the noise and loud, biased opinions of a constant droning in the modern day world. When we are willing to turn inward, it’s amazing what we can find that can then be examined, healed, discovered, or released.

Wellness centers around the world promote the power of meditation, thanks to its ability to reduce tension and promote deep relaxation. Additionally, meditation practice increases mindfulness, which allows you to reshape your life goals and priorities. Floating and meditation go hand in hand, because this experience is a peaceful, prime location to complete work related to self-reflection.

How Float Therapy Visits Increase Creativity

Float sessions often initiate creative inspiration. In fact, by unlocking new lines of communication along our neural pathways, float therapy helps to:

  • Rid established patterns.
  • Stimulate creative thinking.
  • Engage our imaginations.

For example, author Michael Hutchison, who wrote the book on float therapy, said he couldn’t have completed the project without regular float center visits. In fact, he said the book “is not only about floating, but was conceived while floating and largely written in my mind while floating.”

Lifestyle Benefits of Float Therapy

Like massage, yoga, or acupuncture, floatation therapy is a wellness practice, and the more you practice, the more improvements you’ll see in your day-to-day life. Regular float appointments may aid in:

Stronger relationships: Those who float may be able to enjoy stronger relationships with their family, friends and co-workers. If you’re able to reduce stress, sleep soundly, focus more and discover mental stability, you may begin to find your interactions and connections with others more positive and meaningful.

Changing bad habits: Be it smoking, drinking, or even eating to excess, floatation can work as an intervention tool to assist in ending bad habits and addictions. The improved connection between the mind and body can encourage you to bring more awareness to your decisions and how your life choices make you feel.

Improved self-love: The daily hustle and bustle can be stressful and overwhelming – so much so that we can forget to carve out time for ourselves. Adding regular floatation to your wellness routine is a simple and effective way to take a step back, soothe your mind and soul and emerge recharged and renewed.

What to expect before, during and after your float session

On the day of your float

On the day of your float, Please arrive 10-15 minutes early to ensure you receive all of your time in the float Pod.

Avoid shaving, tanning, waxing (or anything that would increase skin sensitivity) the day of your session. If your skin is extra sensitive, be mindful of shaving the day before as well. Vaseline is provided to cover small cuts or abrasions to keep them from stinging.
Be sure you’re not hungry, but don’t eat a giant meal before you float. You may just hear your belly while you’re floating!

Avoid any caffeinated products at least 4 hours before your float.

What to bring?

Clothes that are easy to change in and out of. The pod room has a private shower so you’re welcome to wash the salt off your skin and out of your hair after your session. Towels, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash are provided. If you prefer to bring your own, you are more than welcome to.

Bring a case for your contact lenses. You’re welcome to wear them while floating, but if you get salt water in your eyes, contacts make it difficult to rinse out.

We have some styling products, and some other essential personal care products for you to use as well if you wish.

During the float

Earplugs are provided to help shut out any noise, and to keep from getting saltwater in your ears. These are easiest to put in before you shower while your ears are still dry.

After a quick shower, you may enter the float pod which contains 10 inches of water and 1,000 lbs of salt dissolved inside.

-You will always have complete control of the door in the room and the lid on the float pod. You are welcome to leave them wide open or close them- whichever is most comfortable for you!

-Lie back in the water. The buoyancy will effortlessly support you. Be mindful to release the muscles in your neck, back, and shoulders and let them rest. There is a foam “halo” head/neck rest that you can use to provide more comfort when you lie your head back. We encourage you to take it into the pod with you just in case you want to try it. This will prevent the need to get out if you change your mind.

-Once your session has started, you will have control of the lights and the music from inside the pod.

-The first 20 (or so) minutes of your first float are very exploratory. Expect to take a little while to settle in. Switch body positions to determine what’s most comfortable for you.

-You are in full control of the lights inside the tank. We recommend you turn them off to allow your brain to be completely free of sensory stimuli, but the choice is 100% yours.

Avoid touching your face and eyes after your hands have been submerged in the salty water. In the event you do, or inadvertently touch your face, there is a spray bottle of fresh water inside the tank to rinse.

Any pain or tension may feel more noticeable at the beginning of your float. This is normal as all other distractions have been removed from your surroundings. Breathe, relax, and know that all of it will slowly “float” away.

After the float

After your session, we’ll provide q-tips, lotion, and other products in our hospitality basket in the restroom for you to use if you wish.
